"Somkid Pumpuang has been arrested thanks to information from the public," said Major General Puttipong Musikul of the Khon Kaen provincial police force.

Somkid was sentenced to life in 2005 for the murder of five women involved in the sex and prostitution industry. The 55-year-old prisoner was pardoned and released in May, after Thai authorities judged that he had behaved well during the re-education process.

However, just 7 months later, Somkid became the main suspect in the murder of a 51-year-old cleaning lady at a hotel on the morning of December 15. Authorities rewarded 50,000 baht (US $ 1,650) for those who provided information to arrest Somkid. The Thai Crime Department publishes a photo of Somkid on their Facebook page titled "The Most Wanted."

Thailand is one of the countries with the largest number of prisoners in the world. The current number of prisoners in Thailand is 370,000, of which nearly 80% are sentenced to prison for drug-related crimes.
