The Philippines Ministry of Health has reported a new case of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours in the country of 6,352, the highest in Southeast Asia.

New figures bring the total number of Covid-19 infections in the Philippines to 112,593, while deaths also increased by 11, to 2,115.

The news was announced at a time when Manila and its surrounding areas such as Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan were re-imposed strict blockade within 2 weeks from August 4 to August 18 due to the number of new infections.

Philippine police have been deployed to force people who are virus-positive and unable to isolate themselves at home into government-run concentration camps.

About 27 million people in these areas can only go out when they need to buy food, medicine and work.

Just hours after the government announced the re-imposed blockade, many people were stranded in Manila and unable to return to their homeland due to public transport and domestic flights.

"We ran out of money. We couldn't leave the airport because there were no relatives here," said Ruel Damaso, a 36-year-old construction worker.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte over the weekend apologized for having no funds to support Manila residents who are about to receive a blockade due to soaring Covid-19 cases.

The Philippines in mid-March imposed the world's most stringent blockade in the capital and localities to prevent Covid-19.

After the blockade order was relaxed, many factories, offices, shopping centers, restaurants and entertainment services were allowed to resume operations, causing cases to skyrocket, despite the government's request for people to wear the blockade.
