Indonesia announced six more deaths due to nCoV, bringing the number of deaths across the country to 25, the highest in Southeast Asia.
"Another 5 deaths in Jakarta and one in Central Java," Achmad Yurianto, an Indonesian government spokesman for the Covid-19 pandemic, said at a press conference in Jakarta today.
The number of deaths due to nCoV in Indonesia reached 25, the highest in Southeast Asia. The country also recorded 82 more cases of nCoV, bringing the total number of cases in Indonesia to 309. Yurianto says 15 people have recovered and may be discharged.
Jakarta recorded the highest number of deaths with 17 cases. The death rate from nCoV in Indonesia is 8%, nearly double the global average of 4.1%. The majority of deaths are between the ages of 45-65 and have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
According to Yurianto, Indonesia is preparing to conduct a large-scale screening to detect nCoV infections, but did not specify when this would be done.
Covid-19 appeared in 179 countries and territories after the onset in Wuhan in December 2019, leaving more than 220,000 infected, nearly 9,000 dead and nearly 86,000 recovering. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia recorded the largest number of cases with 900 cases, of which two died. The country with the second highest number of deaths from nCoV in the region is the Philippines, with 17 deaths.
