Ukraine Julia Volok thought she would be warmly welcomed after being evacuated from Wuhan, but the reality was exactly the opposite.

Instead, the 26-year-old girl and her evacuees panicked when a bus carrying them was attacked by protesters on their way to a quarantine area in the town of Novi Sanzhary, Poltava region, central Ukraine on February 20. .

Villagers erected roadblocks, burned tires and threw stones at Volok buses carrying 71 evacuees, including 45 Ukrainian citizens and 27 foreigners. The Ukrainian government was forced to deploy an armored vehicle and hundreds of riot police to unite.

"We heard the sound of broken glass windows and people lying down in the aisle," Volok told the telephone. "No country treats its citizens like this. We are attacked, as enemies of the people, and it is painful. We do not apologize to anyone."

Ukraine has not reported any cases of nCoV and the government says all evacuees from Wuhan had their health checked before boarding a plane to Ukraine. Despite the promise that there is no danger, locals are still afraid of being infected with the virus.

Volok and others are currently isolated in a clinic with Health Minister Zoriana Skaletska, who volunteered to stay here for two weeks to reassure public opinion after the violence. Aleksandra Volkova, a Ukrainian in the quarantine, posted on social media the picture of the room she was living in with basic furniture, the door could not be locked and a shower made her shocked.

However, Volok emphasized that these were minor issues and that 72 evacuees were happy, grateful to the police force. Several officers were injured protecting them from protesters.

"The fact that this door doesn't close is a small thing. We haven't been here for a lifetime, two weeks is not a long time," she said.

Volok has a TV in the room, even given a SIM to make calls. They finally eat Ukrainian food after a long time away from home.

"Radish salad is a great pleasure for us," Volok said.
