"We will make a final verdict by the end of this year," the North Korean official added.

Kim Yong-chol, President of the Asia-Pacific Peace Committee (KAPPC) of the North, also criticized US President Donald Trump for his recent remarks. "Trump is an impatient old man. The US president must understand that his deceitful style is completely meaningless and unrealistic. We have nothing to lose," Kim said.

The statements came after Trump warned on Monday that Kim Jong-un could "lose everything" if acting in a hostile manner and stressing that Pyongyang needs denuclearization. "He doesn't want to lose his special relationship with the US President or interfere in the presidential election in November next year," Trump wrote on Twitter.

US-North Korea relations recently showed signs of tension when Trump called Kim Jong-un a "rocket man" at a meeting with NATO leaders and implicitly warned the US that it could use force in case of need. North Korean officials have said that Kim Jong-un was "dissatisfied" with the US president's comments and warned the country would respond accordingly if Washington took military measures.

Pyongyang has repeatedly warned against the desire to continue engaging in useless negotiations with Washington, threatening to respond if the Trump administration does not change its "hostile" approach. The end of the year is the deadline for the US to make a proposal that North Korea can accept. This has raised concerns that Pyongyang may continue to test long-range and nuclear missiles later this year or early next year.
