Only a quarter of Japanese want the Olympic Games to be held next year, while the rest want Tokyo to continue postponing or canceling the event because of Covid-19.
According to a poll conducted by Japan's Kyodo news agency nationwide with 1,045 people in three days, only 23.9% of respondents supported the organization of the 2020 Olympic Games, which was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
26.4% of respondents want the Olympics to continue to be delayed, while 33.7% of respondents say that Japan should abandon the event planning altogether.
Another survey by Asahi Shimbun, the second largest newspaper in Japan, also found that only 33% of the 2,097 respondents supported the Olympics next year, while 61% wanted to continue postponing or canceling.
The results of the national surveys this time are similar to last month's survey of Tokyo residents, in which more than half of the respondents agreed to support the postponement or cancellation of the Olympic Games.
Officials from Japan and the 2020 Olympic Games have vowed not to consider continuing to postpone the event.
Last week, the International Olympic Committee Chairman Thomas Bach said the Tokyo Olympics next year could be "a milestone for the whole world" when marking the first event of the world reuniting after the pandemic.
However, Bach also warned that a complicated translation situation meant that many scenarios were being considered for the event.
Covid-19 has appeared in more than 210 countries and territories, causing more than 14.6 million infected and more than 600,000 dead.
