Lana Sue Clayton, 53, in South Carolina, was sentenced to 25 years in prison after confessing to poisoning her husband with eye drops for three days.
In the January 16 trial, Clayton, a former nurse, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and misuse of food or medicine. She admitted giving her husband Steven Clayton, 64, a drink mixed with Visine eye drops for three consecutive days in July 2018. The poison killed Steven, according to York county prosecutors.
"I put Visine in Steven's drink, but it only made him uncomfortable. I never thought it could kill him," Clayton told the court.
The prosecutor was initially charged with Clayton with intentional murder for allegedly knowing that the poison contained in Visine eye drops could be lethal. They accused her of deliberately poisoning him to appropriate property. Visine is a pharmaceutical product containing tetrahydrozoline, which is fatal if swallowed in high doses.
Clayton then accepted the plea agreement when he was reduced to manslaughter.
Case files show that the Clayton couple live in a million-dollar home. Steven, a retired businessman, also owns other real estate worth more than a million dollars.
Clayton's lawyer defends his client who was sexually abused as a child and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. The defendant tried to kill himself when authorities investigated in August 2018.
