Japanese police today arrested 42-year-old Shinji Aoba, who was suspected of setting fire to an animation studio at Kyoto Animation that left 36 people dead last year.
"We arrested 42-year-old Shinji Aoba on charges of killing 36 people by setting fire to the studio," a Japanese police spokesman said today.
The decision to arrest Aoba was made 10 months after the burning of an animation studio in Kyoto city, leaving 36 people dead and dozens injured.
Aoba pleaded guilty, but his ignition is still unclear.
Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that Aoba was still recovering, but officials had prepared a medical treatment facility at a police station where he was taken for questioning.
Kyoto Animation expects the suspect to be prosecuted for the highest sentence.
The fire of the Kyoto Animation animation studio was the most violent crime in decades in Japan, a country famous for its safety and low crime rates, especially violent crimes.
The incident also shocked animation fans around the world and received condolences from world leaders such as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Apple CEO Tim Cook.
