Hong Kong calls the US sanctions imposed on six new security law officials "crazy, shameful and despicable".
"The US government took advantage of all the incidents and excuses to make slanderous remarks on national security laws, and attacked the Chinese government and the Hong Kong Special Region in seriously enforcing the law,
"There is no longer any doubt that national security law has touched the nerves of outside powers," the spokesman said.
The statement comes a day after the US announced sanctions on six mainland and special zone officials accused of being involved in the enforcement of the new national security law.
The list of sanctioned officials includes Tam Yiu-chung, Hong Kong's sole delegate to the Chinese parliament, Hong Kong affairs official and Macau You Quan, deputy director of the national security office.
The sanctioned people will be frozen all assets related to the US if any.
Three special zone police officers released a joint statement today, describing the sanctions as "unfair" and accusing the United States of "promoting illegal conduct and attacking independence and self-control."
"We will continue to do our job without fear, resolutely protect the security of the country and Hong Kong special zone, while at the same time strictly enforce the law," the three officers said.
Hong Kong security law criminalizes four types of national security crimes, including separatism, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign or outside parties to endanger security.
The US and many Western countries expressed deep concern about Hong Kong's security laws, warning against the risk of undermining the "one country, two systems" principle.
