Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir said Trump's re-election would be disastrous and expressed support for Democratic presidential candidate Biden.
"I never thought he would win, but he won," former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said in an online interview today, referring to US President Donald Trump.
By comparison, Mahathir said the former vice president, as well as Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, was more "rational" and was sympathetic to the recent racial unrest in the United States.
"I don't know if Trump will be re-elected, but I hope Biden will be different from him," Mahathir said, adding that he told some Americans that "I will vote for Biden, even though I don't have one."
Mahathir acknowledged that Malaysia also suffered from prolonged political instability, but he was still confused by the White House's problems.
"He fired all the staff who didn't support him, like a third world country," Mahirir said.
Mahathir said he observed the protest in the US after George Floyd's death and was surprised when Trump announced his readiness to deploy troops to respond to the protests.
"How can he say that? He must have clear evidence. Is Gugino acting good or is that the truth of what happened? The entire press said it was true," the former prime minister said.
Mahathir served as prime minister of Malaysia for 22 years, from 1981 to 2003. He went on to become prime minister after winning the 2018 general election, but lost his position in a political coup in March.
