Finnish Transport Minister Sanna Marin, 34, was selected as the youngest new prime minister in the country, after her predecessor Antti Rinne resigned.
The Social Democratic Party of December 8 unanimously chose Marin to replace Mr. Rinne and will take office in the coming days. Marin is the member of the party that holds the most seats in the five-party coalition in government, and is the youngest in the world as prime minister.
Former Prime Minister Rinne resigned on December 3 following criticism of the Center Party, one of five coalition parties due to a lack of confidence in how he handled the protest of the Finnish postal worker.
"We still have a lot of work to do in front of us to rebuild our faith," Marin told reporters on Dec. 8, after winning a majority of votes. Marin also plans a joint government program to bring together the five-party coalition.
The center-left coalition of five parties joined the Finnish government six months ago, agreed to maintain its political line and emphasized its determination to balance carbon emissions after Rinne announced his resignation.
Finland is holding the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) until the end of the year, playing a central role in efforts to cut the budget for the bloc. Finland is facing protests and strikes that paralyze operations in a number of large companies and businesses.
