The Philippine President attacked Deputy Robredo as "insane", unreliable and could put the country in danger.
"I cannot appoint her to the cabinet if it is her behavior. There could never be a position in the cabinet for her," Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said at a press conference in the Palace. president in Manila on November 19, referring to Vice President Leni Robredo.
Robredo on 6 November agreed to co-chair the Inter-Agency Committee on Drug Abuse (IACD) under the appointment of Duterte, although many of her political allies recommend this as a "trap" to turn her into "scapegoat" for errors in the presidential anti-drug campaign.
After being appointed, Ms. Robredo met with officials at the US Embassy, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and pointed out that China is the main source of drugs in the Philippines. Duterte accused her of overreaching, should only give instructions instead of participating in law enforcement.
He also accused his subordinates of being "deranged" to discuss his war on drugs with outsiders and could put the country in danger by disclosing sensitive information. Duterte said that Robredo is "taking dangerous steps" with a new role in the anti-drug agency.
"The way she behaved right after being appointed by me was not inspiring," the Philippine president said, adding that Robredo had an ambition to become president and should not have access to confidential documents.
At a press conference for nearly 90 minutes, he also asked people to stop asking about his health, saying that very few Filipinos don't get sick at the age of 74.
A spokeswoman for Ms. Robredo did not comment on the President's criticism. Robredo previously said that she did not need a cabinet position.
President Duterte has launched a war on drugs since taking office in 2016, allowing police to shoot and kill suspects on site without trial. Many groups fighting for human rights believe the death toll in Duterte's campaign reaches 27,000.
Vice President Robredo currently leads the Philippine opposition. She was an economic lawyer, involved in politics since 2013, a year after her husband, Interior Minister Jesse Robredo, died in a plane crash.
The President and Vice President of the Philippines are elected individually, so dissent is inevitable. Duterte repeatedly criticized his "incompetent" deputy, while Robredo also regularly condemned his "bloody" drug campaign.
