At least 16 people were killed in an explosion that rocked Aden airport on December 30, shortly after the Prime Minister and members of the newly formed cabinet landed.

Witnesses said they heard loud explosions and gunshots at the airport as the plane landed.

Yemeni Information Minister Moammar Al-Eryani said all officials were safe and had arrived at the presidential palace in the city.

Yemen's internationally recognized government and southern separatists began to set up a cabinet on December 18, setting up a joint front against the Houthi rebels that took over the capital Sanaa and much of the north.

Cabinet members arrived in Aden a few days after Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi appointed them in Saudi Arabia, which is leading the military coalition against the Houthi rebels.

Tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, were killed and millions fled their homes during the five-year war in Yemen.
