A baby is thought to have died at Uttar Pradesh state hospital shortly after being born after a dog attack.
Ravi Kumar, the baby's father, told media he took his wife to Akash Ganga private hospital in Farrukhabad city, Uttar Pradesh state to give birth on January 13. After the baby was born by cesarean section, his wife was transferred to the recovery room.
A few minutes later, a hospital employee suddenly ran out and screamed in fear that there was a stray dog in the operating room. Kumar immediately rushed into the room and saw her son lying in the middle of the floor. "There were bites on his chest and left eye. He was lying motionless," Kumar said.
Meanwhile, the hospital confirmed that the baby died in the womb, not by a dog bite. Kumar accused the hospital staff of giving him a bribe to keep this a secret. Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of the baby's death.
"Initial evidence shows that the child was bitten by a dog. We are investigating how the dog entered the hospital," judge Manvendra Singh said. "We are investigating the matter thoroughly."
State officials said they had also closed the hospital because the facility operates without a license.
The state of Uttar Pradesh has had several deaths due to a recent attack of stray dogs. Last year, two children aged 3 and 7 were bitten by dogs. In 2018, villagers in Sitapur district said dogs killed 12 children in a series of attacks.
