ASEAN foreign ministers will hold a special meeting on March 2 to discuss Myanmar's situation, amid the escalating violence in the country.
"A special meeting of ASEN ministers will be convened via video tomorrow, where we will listen to representatives of Myanmar's military government," Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan told parliament today.
The announcement comes a day after a bloody rally in Myanmar when police fired live bullets, killing at least 18 people and injuring 30, according to the United Nations Human Rights Office.
Mr Balakrishnan called on the Myanmar military government to stop using lethal violence "and to take immediate steps to de-escalate the situation to prevent further bloodshed, violence and death".
"We believe this can only begin if President Win Myint, State Counselor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners are released immediately," the Singapore Foreign Minister told
Last week, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi met with his Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai and Myanmar's army-appointed foreign minister Wunna Maung Lwin in Bangkok to discuss Myanmar's situation.
Indonesia leads efforts to guide the path to resolving the Myanmar crisis with the help of ASEAN members.
Despite violent action from security forces, many Burmese protesters continued today.
