A 5-year-old boy in Alaska carrying an 18-month-old boy walked nearly a kilometer in the negative weather after being left alone at home.
The incident happened on 3/12, when only boys and children in the house had power outages. In a panic, the boy wore socks and dressed thinly, taking him out of his home in the remote village of Venetie, Alaska state police said in a statement on 6/12.
After walking for nearly a kilometer in the snow with temperatures down to -35 degrees Celsius, the two children went to another house. The people called to report to the authorities and the police hired a plane to come to Venetie village to check on the brothers' condition. Both were injured due to the cold weather.
Julie Peter, 37, who left two children at home, was arrested on charges of endangering children. It is not clear how she is related to the children and how long they have been left in the house.
Like other communities in Alaska in the late fall, the temperature in the village of Venetie, where only 175 people live, is usually at the tens of degrees.
