China5 people died and 14 were hospitalized after drinking industrial alcohol at a wedding in Yunnan province.
The incident occurred last week at a family's wedding in Manhai County, Yunnan Province, southwestern China, a local government statement on November 15 said. The family used alcohol from a Yan family in the village to invite guests.
However, after drinking alcohol, some guests have symptoms of vomiting and blurred vision. Five of them died, 14 were hospitalized without being life-threatening.
Market inspectors inspected the wine at the wedding reception and found that methanol content exceeded safety standards. The investigation showed that Mr. Yan bought 95% pure industrial alcohol to process wine. Mixing industrial alcohol with alcohol can lead to methanol poisoning, which is dangerous to the nervous system.
Mr. Yan was arrested by the police.
In November 2017, three customers in Guangdong province died from methanol poisoning after drinking whiskey made from alcohol brewed underground, instead of in a supervised, legal factory. Thirteen people involved in the production, distribution and sale of alcohol were arrested.
In 2004, a man in Guangxi was sentenced to death for using industrial alcohol to make sticky rice for sale, killing 4 and hospitalizing 5.
