Russia is ready to assist Egypt in rescuing the Ever Given ship blocking the Suez Canal for almost a week, although Cairo has not made a request.

"We hope the problem will be fixed in the near future, restoring the canal's operations and we are always ready to give all Egyptians our best support," said Georgy Borisenko, Russian ambassador to Egypt.

The lifeboat was operating around the Evergreen vessel stranded in the Suez Canal on March 24.

He added that Cairo has not contacted Moscow yet to request assistance, but said Russia "is very sympathetic to the current situation in the Suez Canal", describing it as "an important waterway for the whole world".

The large container ship Ever Given, a total tonnage of more than 200,000 tons, crashed across the banks of the Suez Canal and ran aground on the morning of March 24 when moving from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

Crossing ships crippled international trade, forcing many companies to consider switching transit routes through Cape of Good Hope in Africa, a more expensive and longer route to travel between Asia and Europe.

Earlier this week, referring to the paralysis of international trade in the Suez Canal, another Russian ambassador touted the northern maritime route as a reliable alternative, in a development effort.

Moscow has invested heavily in the development of the Northern Sea Route, allowing ships to cut their journeys to Asian ports by 15 days compared to the service through the Suez Canal.

US President Joe Biden said on 26/3 that the US is looking for ways to assist Egypt in clearing the Suez Canal.
