Sri Lankan Gotabaya Rajapaksa sent an email to resign to the Chairman of the National Assembly, a few hours after he arrived in Singapore.
Indunil Yapa, spokesman for the National Assembly Chairman Sri Lanka, today said that the email resigned from President Rajapaksa is being transferred to the country's attorney general to consider the legal effects before being officially accepted.
The authenticity and legality of the email needs to be checked, Yapa said.
If the email is accepted, Mr. Rajapaksa will be the first president to resign since Sri Lanka approved the presidential institution in 1978.
Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa spoke in the National Assembly in Colombo after being elected in January 2020.
The information about the resignation email released just a few hours after the plane carrying President Sri Lanka and his wife, Mrs. Ioma and the two defender landed at Singapore's Changi airport.
We confirmed that Mr. Rajapaksa was allowed to enter Singapore on a separate visit, the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
President Rajapaksa on the morning of July 13 fled Sri Lanka on a military plane to the Maldives.
After reaching the Maldives, Rajapaksa appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the president.

The protests in Sri Lanka have lasted for months and peaked in recent days.
The country lacks severe foreign exchange, causing the import of fuel, food and drugs to be limited.
