The Proud Boys is a far-right group that supports President Trump, but is controversial because of its extremist ideology and many deviant views.
Asked at his first debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden on the evening of September 29 whether he would oppose militant groups and white elite groups, instead of giving a clear stance.
Proud Boys was founded by right-wing activist Gavin McInnes, co-founder of Vice Media, in the 2016 US presidential election. McInnes then sought to separate himself from this far-right group.
The group has a few hundred members, with chapters in most states and also in a few other countries, according to the American Federation of Defamation (ADL).
They describe themselves as an all-men club, made up of "Western Zonyists" who "refuse to apologize for creating the modern world".
Chauvinism is an extreme sectarian cultism.
Prao Boys, whose members are multi-racial, have been criticized by groups that track extremist activities for its misleading, anti-Muslim and anti-immigration allegations.
Last year, two Proud Boys members were sentenced to four years in prison for participating in a brawl with anti-fascist protesters after McInnes's speech at a Republican club in New York City last year.
During the presidential debate on September 29, chief Chris Wallace asked Trump if he was willing to condemn militias and white elite groups, and to ask them to "withdraw" and not.
Trump agreed, but added: "Who do you want me to condemn?"
The US President then urged the Proud Boys to "step back and wait", but quickly redirected the conversation to "Antifa", a left-wing anti-fascist ideology, whom he says has caused love.
In the group of Proud Boys members on the messaging app Telegram, they share a logo with the message "quit and wait" that President Trump put out.
Joe Biggs, a Proud Boys member, expressed his delight on Parler's social network when the group was mentioned during the Trump-Biden debate, saying: "President Trump told the Proud Boys to wait because someone needs to.
On September 30 at the White House, Trump withdrew his statement, telling reporters he knew nothing about the Proud Boys group and that they should let law enforcement do their jobs.
The Proud Boys have been in fierce clash over the past few months with protesters in the Black Lives Matter movement and Antifa in Portland and several other cities.
At rallies, Proud Boys members often wear black and yellow polo shirts, armor and weapons such as rifles, paintball guns and baseball bat.
Before a Proud Boys rally took place in Portland on October 26, Oregon Governor Kate Brown declared a state of emergency in the city over two weekends citing threats of civil unrest.
The last protest was still going on in peace with hundreds of supporters of the Proud Boys, but police and leftist protesters later clashed in central Portland.
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), an anti-hate advocacy organization, in 2018 placed Prao Boy on the list of hate groups.
The lawsuit has not yet closed and lawyers from both sides declined to comment.
Oregon Governor Brown criticized the Proud Boys in a September 30 tweet: "Please be clear: Proud Boys are white supreme whiteists. Racism and hatred are not manifestations of
