Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido is expected to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, on January 20.
Colombian President Ivan Duque tweeted that he plans to meet Guaido on Sunday afternoon and that Guaido will attend a regional counterterrorism meeting tomorrow. At the meeting, Venezuelan opposition leader will meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, two sources close to Guaido said. A spokesman for Guaido and the US State Department has not yet commented.
Guaido has not left the country since February last year when he defied a court travel ban, to neighboring Colombia to organize the delivery of aid goods across the border into Venezuela with backing from the United States. However, this effort was stopped by soldiers loyal to President Nicolas Maduro.
National Assembly Chairman Guaido in January called himself an interim president to challenge Maduro's power, leaving Venezuela in a deep political and economic crisis. Guaido has the support of the United States and some allied nations, while Russia, China, Cuba ... consider Maduro to be Venezuela's only constitutional president.
Maduro accused Guaido of being a main puppet by the White House. In an interview published by the Washington Post yesterday, the Venezuelan President said the Trump administration underestimated his power and that he was "unconcerned" about sanctions.
