Venezuela became a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council on October 17 with 105 votes, despite fierce opposition from the United States.

As a result, Venezuela and Brazil have become two representatives for Latin America and the Caribbean in the United Nations Human Rights Council of 47 members. When the voting results were announced, a long round of applause came from the attending delegates.

The Human Rights Council, founded by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006, is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights. This council may delegate independent claims in specific situations. The United States withdrew from the Human Rights Council in 2018, accusing it of repeatedly opposing Israel and not reforming its institution.
