An American soldier stationed near Daegu city, southeastern South Korea, tested positive for nCoV and was quarantining himself.
US forces in South Korea (USFK) today announced the discovery of a 23-year-old army soldier infected with nCoV at Carroll base, located about 20 km north of Daegu.
This is the first active-duty US soldier infected with corona virus in South Korea, recorded just days after relatives of a USFK soldier infected with nCoV in Daegu.
The US military said nCoV-infected soldiers were quarantining at home outside the base, but did not disclose the health status of the person or whether the USFK would further isolate those who have contact with the soldiers.
The US maintains two bases in Daegu city, but does not disclose the number of troops stationed here. The USFK commander earlier asked the soldiers who had been to the Tan Thien Dia sect to quarantine themselves, raising the threat assessment from low to medium force, banning soldiers from coming and leaving the citadel. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) today reported that the number of nCoV infections in the country has increased to 1,146, the second highest in the world, just behind mainland China. Of the 169 new infections, there are 153 cases in Daegu City, 300 km southeast of Seoul, and neighboring North Gyeongsang Province. The country also recorded the 11th death related to nCoV as a 35-year-old Mongolian man.
