India: Two 3 and 6 year old boys in the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh both died of severe burns after falling into a sambhar pot.
Suresh, 3, was playing when he fell into a sambhar pot, a curry made from lentils and spicy spices popular in southern India, boiled on a stove, at a family-run party. held to celebrate the opening of its store on November 18 in Shabad district, Telangana state. Suresh was rushed to the hospital but died from severe burns the following day. The victim's father filed a complaint with the police, but no one was arrested.
In Andhra Pradesh state, two people, including the principal of a school in Kurnool district, are under police investigation for suspected negligence leading to the similar death of 6-year-old Behlapuram Reddy on November 13. Reddy and her classmates ran into the lunch room and unfortunately fell into the boiling sambhar.
"There are no teachers there. Some staff pulled the baby out and taken him to the hospital," the police said. Reddy was treated for a burn at a local hospital but died last week.
Lunch in schools in India is usually cooked in large pots up to 1.2 meters in diameter. Two suspects related to Reddy's death are being held in custody.
