Twitter announced that it would give control of the @POTUS US presidential account to Joe Biden on January 20 inauguration, whether Trump conceded or not.
"Twitter is actively preparing to support the transfer of White House accounts on January 20, 2021," Twitter spokesman Nick Pacilio said on November 20.
Pacilio added that the handover of the White House Twitter accounts is being done in consultation with the US National Archives, just as the social networking giant did in 2017.
Besides handing over the @POTUS US presidential account to Biden, Twitter will also hand over other official accounts such as @FLOTUS (First Lady) and @VP (US Vice President) to the new owner.
US President Donald Trump, who actively uses Twitter, uses both @POTUS accounts in parallel, with 32 million followers, and his personal account is @realDonaldTrump, with about 88 million followers.
Trump mainly uses his personal Twitter account @realDonaldTrump to post important information, while the @POTUS account is mainly used to re-share tweets.
Twitter is being "tough" to the US president by repeatedly tagging warnings with tweets that he accused election fraud or claimed to have won.
