Trump warned that a trade measure with NATO allies would not increase the defense budget to 2% of GDP as promised.

"Many countries are approaching and about to reach 2%. But some are not, and we can take measures related to trade," US President Donald Trump said at the meeting. The ambassador to the UN Security Council took place at the White House on December 5.

Trump pointed to the fact that only 9 out of 29 NATO members now have committed to spending 2% of GDP on defense budgets. "It is not fair, they receive protection from the United States and do not pay extra money. I actually called them idle," Trump said.

Since taking office, the White House boss has repeatedly pressured NATO member states, forcing them to increase defense spending to 2% of GDP to reach the final level of 4% of GDP. Trump has urged allies to do this for years and sees this as one of the important issues.

The US president asserted that 2% was not high, but he did not specify which "trade-related measures" would be imposed on NATO members who did not meet this commitment.

"You are protected by the world's largest military force and refuse to pay. You are shirks of responsibility," the White House boss added, saying he had directly mentioned this to his colleagues. NATO alliance during a summit in London.

Trump declared the NATO leadership conference in London "completely successful" and that the alliance was in a "great" period. He also responded strongly to NATO's "brain dead" statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, saying it was an "unpleasant comment to the remaining 28 nations".

The US president pointed out that France is in a difficult economic situation and that it needs more coalition than any other member state.

After 70 years of establishment, NATO is facing many challenges as Trump is constantly skeptical of the role of the organization and requires allies to increase the cost of contributions or conflicts between Turkey and member countries.
