President Trump has just decided to extend two immigration bans to prevent many people from applying for "green cards" and seasonal foreign workers into the US.

The decision was made by President Donald Trump on December 31, as measures he deems necessary to protect American workers in the midst of the economic turmoil caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The bans, which were enacted in April and June last year, expire on December 31, 2019, but are currently extended until March 31.

Many businesses have voiced their opposition to the ban on foreign workers.

At least 20 million Americans are receiving unemployment benefits while the pandemic is still raging across the country.

In October, a federal judge in California blocked the Trump administration's suspension of work visas for hundreds of thousands of foreign workers.

The California judge's statement contradicted the previous decision of the federal judge in Washington, DC, meaning that the appellate court will make the final decision.

The United States issues 85,000 H-1B visas each year to people with "highly specialized knowledge" and the minimum requirement for a bachelor's degree, often in science, technology, engineering, teaching and accounting.
