India: Two trainheads headed for a railway in Hyderabad, injuring 17 people, including the driver.
The crash occurred at Kacheguda Station in Hyderabad, Telangana state, on the morning of November 11, when a train of the Multimodal Transport System (MMTS) entered the tracks that the Hundry Express high-speed train was parking.
Video from a security camera showed MMTS crashing into the head of Hundry Express, causing the carriages to be lifted up and deviated from the tracks, then many passengers fled.
Authorities quickly arrived at the scene and 17 injured were taken to local hospitals, including MMTS driver L Chandrasekhar.
6 cars of MMTS and three cars of Hundry Express were damaged. The locomotive was crushed after the collision, causing Chandrasekhar to be trapped inside and the rescue force took 8 hours to bring the victim out. Chandrasekhar is currently in critical condition.
Initial investigations revealed that Chandrasekhar had steered the train forward despite not receiving permission from the railway staff. A witness said hundreds of passengers were lucky to escape thanks to the slow running MMTS and Hundry Express stood still when the collision occurred.
At least 10 trains were canceled, 5 were delayed, one had to change direction after the accident.
India has one of the largest railway networks in the world, but frequent accidents occur because most of the infrastructure is obsolete. The government is committed to modernizing the railway, but the process is slow.
