One study found that people in 81 countries around the world could have lost 20.5 million years of life from the pandemic.
According to research published in the Journal of Scientific Reports on February 18, Héctor Pifarré i Arolas, expert at the Center for Economic and Health Research at Pompeu Fabra University, Spain, and international colleagues for
Life expectancy loss (YLL) is the only difference between the actual age at death and the estimated average life expectancy.
Research based on 1,279,866 deaths in 81 countries around the world as of 6/1.
Compared to other common causes of death globally, YLL from Covid-19 can be two to nine times higher than seasonal influenza-related YLL, and 0.75 times more likely than disease-related YLL.
"This study shows how badly the pandemic has caused human damage," said Dr. Simon Clarke, associate professor of cell microbiology at the University of Reading.
"These data provide more details than just looking at the mean age of death due to Covid-19 and comparing it with the economic loss caused by imposing a prevention restriction," added Clarke.
