Malena Ernman, mother of environmental activist Greta Thunberg, is a famous Swedish singer who performed at many European opera houses.
Greta, 16, from Sweden, became a world-renowned environmental activist for the past year, attracting millions of people to participate in anti-climate protests in many countries. However, she is not the only star in the family.
Malena Ernman, 48, Greta's mother, is a famous opera singer, while her father is actor Svante Thunberg. Thanks to that, she soon became bold in public.
"Having a famous mother is one of the advantages," Greta told the New York Times in February. "I'm quite familiar with the media and how to work with them."
Ms. Ernman is one of the leading female vocalists in Sweden, a member of the Royal Academy of Music and has performed at major European opera houses. She was the national representative at the 2009 Eurovision famous singing competition with the song "La Voix" and the video of Ernman's performance attracted more than 2 million views. In August, the singer performed before 22,000 people at the Maritime Stadium in Stockholm.
In his 2018 book Scenes From the Heart, Ernman talked about his life before Greta became famous, saying he took his whole family on tours throughout Europe. However, Greta's passion for climate change changed her family and her singing career. The young activist has persuaded his parents to be vegetarian and stopped flying in 2016, prompting Ernman to abandon concerts abroad.
Like many people in the world, she decided to support her daughter's environmental efforts.
"I belong to the overwhelming majority, who knew nothing," Ernman wrote on Facebook in March. "I understand that somewhere, there is something bad about the climate and the environment but I I thought everything was still under control. I was wrong. The only thing I'm proud of is listening to my children. "
While Greta became an environmentalist, her younger sister, Beata Ernman, followed her mother's path. The Instagram Beata account is filled with videos of singing and dancing. Ernman once praised Beata and shared an article about a daughter's performance on television.
"Today my daughter Beata Ernman performed solo for the first time on live broadcast," she wrote. "I wish I was as good as half a 13-year-old girl."
