Another 97 deaths from corona virus, an increase of 11.9% over yesterday, bringing the total number of deaths to 910, nearly 100 more than the SARS pandemic.
The Hubei Provincial Health Commission this morning confirmed 91 more local deaths, bringing the number of deaths from pneumonia due to new strain of corona virus (nCoV) in the province to 871.
Hubei also discovered an additional 2,618 new cases, including 1,921 cases in Wuhan alone, where the virus was believed to have originated from a wildlife market in early December 2019. The total number of infections in the whole province so far is 29,631 cases.
The National Health Commission of China (NHC) then also announced that the number of new deaths across mainland China was 97, bringing the total death toll to 908.
Thus, the total number of deaths from nCoV globally is currently 910, including two cases recorded outside of mainland China: a Wuhan man in the Philippines and a 39-year-old man in Hong Kong. . This figure surpassed the number of deaths due to the SARS pandemic in 2002-2003 at 813, according to World Health Organization (WHO) data.
The NHC also said there were 3,062 new infections, bringing the number of infected people in mainland China to 40,171 and the total number of nCoV infections globally to 40,553. There were 3,322 people recovered.
The disease has spread to 31 provinces in China and 26 countries and territories. The WHO said on Monday that the number of reported daily reported deaths and nCoV infections in China was "stable", but it is still too early to confirm whether the spread of the virus has peaked. .
