Emperor Naruhito and Queen Masako today march on the streets in central Tokyo to celebrate the coronation.
At 15:00, the Emperor and Empress began to march along the 4.6 km long route from the Royal Palace on a luxurious convertible. This is the first parade of two since the wedding in 1993. The event was delayed for nearly three weeks because of the devastating Typhoon Hagibis in Japan, killing at least 89 people.
Following the Emperor's car were the cars carrying Prince Fumihito and Prince Phi Kiko and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The parade of 50 cars forming a 400-meter-long line of cars will pass through the Tokyo police headquarters and the parliament building before returning to the emperor's residence in Akasaka.
Security is tightened up. Police checked identities at buildings along the parade route, and checked luggage at 29 locations since morning. Authorities mobilize about 26,000 police officers.
Emperor Naruhito took over the royal family on May 1 after his father Akihito abdicated. His coronation ceremony was held on October 22, officially marking the beginning of the "Order of peace" of Japan. Emperor Naruhito was the first Japanese king to be born after World War II.
