Ms. Best resigned after the Seattle city council on August 10 passed a decision to amend the 2020 budget with 7 votes in favor, one against.

Best, 55, criticized the city council for not consulting her thoroughly before making a decision to cut the police department's budget.

At a press conference at the White House that same day, US President Donald Trump praised Best for "doing a very good job".

Mayor Jenny Durkan said she regrets Best's resignation, adding that the former sheriff herself is a person of color and that she understands "the life of black Americans".

US Attorney General William Barr called Best's resignation "a lesson to state and local leaders on the cost of making irresponsible proposals to cut police budgets"

The decision to reduce the budget for Seattle police comes after months of protesters demanding to cut the budget or disband the force.
