Historian Jon Meacham argues that if Congressman James Clyburn did not back Joe Biden, Donald Trump could indeed have been re-elected.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 21, James Clyburn, the third Democratic leader in the House of Representatives and the highest level of black congressman in the US, attended St John Baptist Church in Hopkins, South Carolina, to attend

"I walked down the aisle of the church, to where the coffin was located. When I returned to my seat, I made eye contact with a woman in the front row. She motioned to call me close," MP

"I need to ask you a question. If you don't want anyone to hear an answer, bend over and whisper to me. Who will you vote for this year's primary election?", Clyburn quoted again.

"I need to hear that. This community also needs to listen to your answers," Jones said.

The veteran South Carolina congressman said Jones' question made him realize he couldn't keep quiet.

Just five months earlier, Emily, the wife who had been with Clyburn for 58 years, passed away.

Two days after conversation at the church, Clyburn met with Biden and announced his intention to publicly support the former US vice president, a move that promises to "spike".

Clyburn's support has really been effective in giving Biden a competitive advantage.

With this result, South Carolina became the first state where African-American voters could prove their important role.

When looking back on the 2020 US presidential election, Biden can be considered a safe and wise choice for the Democratic Party, although it does not bring much traction.

Biden eventually proved his skeptics wrong, beating Trump by more than 7 million popular vote, bigger than almost all presidential elections of the past 20 years.

"I feel vindicated, because so many people on social media make it difficult for me to support Biden," Clyburn said.

After being named the presidential elected by the media, along with "deputy" Kamala Harris, Biden expressed gratitude to the community of color in his victory speech in the city of Wilmington, Delaware.

"In particular, during these times of campaign's collapse, the African-American community has once again stood up for me. They have always supported me, and I will act for them too," said the President.

Many commentators believe that the United States cannot endure another Trump term and that democracy has been pushed to the brink.

Clyburn believed democracy won.

Clyburn admits this prospect "won't take long" to come to fruition, but still believes that Biden "can do what the country needs to do".

"I think Biden will do it. I will definitely work hard to make sure he keeps his word," said the veteran congressman.
