Hospital admissions for Covid-19 in the US reached more than 121,000 on December 28, an unprecedented high, according to the COVID Monitoring Project.
CoV hospitalizations in the United States currently include 22,592 patients in the intensive care unit, increasing capacity utilization from 16% in September to 40%.
Hospital admissions in many states alone also hit record levels.
According to data from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the number of hospitalizations in this state on December 28 was also a record high.
"If I go back in March, I don't think anyone would have expected the situation now, when we are still fighting the pandemic," said Tom Williams, head of the Johnston UNC Hospital in North Carolina.
The state of Arkansas also recorded a record number of hospitalizations for Covid-19 on December 28 with 1,155 cases.
The United States, the world's largest epidemic region, currently records more than 19.7 million infections and more than 343,000 deaths.
