Deputy Ambassador Cherith Norman Chalet said the US has contributed US $ 180 million in debt of more than US $ 1 billion to help the United Nations not run out of money.
The decision to contribute the money was made by Chalet, the deputy ambassador in charge of management and reform issues, informed to the UN General Assembly's Finance and Budget Committee on October 18. Chalet said the US will continue to contribute $ 96 million in November.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that the organization was running a budget deficit and could run out of money by the end of the month. Guterres said the cause of the serious financial crisis the United Nations is facing is that 65 of the 193 member states have not paid annual dues, including the United States, which contributes the most.
Catherine Pollard, the deputy secretary general of the United Nations management strategy, said last week that 128 countries contributed $ 1.99 billion to the organization's 2019 operating budget.
However, 65 countries still owe about US $ 1,386 billion, including US debt of US $ 1,055 billion, including US $ 674 million in 2019 and US $ 381 million in 2018.
According to Pollard, to have a fully operational budget, the UN needs to collect at least $ 808 million from October to December this year. Pollard said the United States is also in debt of $ 3.7 billion for 14 UN peacekeeping missions.
However, Deputy Ambassador Chalet said that because of the difference in the fiscal year of the United States and the United Nations, Washington has always paid fees after October 1 for more than 35 years. "Member States should not be deceived by those who want to distort the truth," she said.
Chalet said the US has also spent more than $ 600 million on the peacekeeping budget since the beginning of the year. "The United States continues to be the largest contributor to the United Nations with nearly $ 10 billion in voluntary contributions," Chalet added.
Farhan Haq, UN deputy spokesman, declined to confirm the US payment but said there were some expenses being made. "Our expectation is to be able to meet November wage demand and we will calculate the next steps," Haq said.
General Secretary Guterres earlier this year asked member states to increase their contributions to the United Nations to resolve financial problems but were not approved. The UN's operating budget for the 2018-2019 school year is nearly US $ 5.4 billion, excluding spending for peacekeeping operations, of which the US contributes 22%.
