US Secretary of State Pompeo warned Tehran would have to bear the consequences if it continued its missile attacks against the US military base in Iraq.
"We must take this opportunity to remind Iranian leaders that any of their attacks, or represent them in any way, harm Americans, allies or interests. our response will be definitive, "Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on 13 December, after a series of missile attacks on US bases in Iraq.
"Iran must respect the sovereignty of its neighbors and immediately stop providing aid and lethal support to third parties in Iraq and across the region," Pompeo added.
The US expressed concern about attacks on US military bases in Iraq and accused some of it was made by Iranian-backed Shiite paramilitary forces. A missile attack on a US base near Baghdad International Airport happened last week and another case today wounded Iraqi army soldiers.
Protests have been taking place in Baghdad and the southern provinces of Iraq since the beginning of October against Iran and its Middle East allies, allegedly responsible for the country's crisis. Washington last week imposed sanctions on three leaders of Shiite Hashing al-Shaabi paramilitary forces, accusing them of suppressing protests in Iraq.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, a close ally of Iran, resigned after two months of protests with about 460 people killed.
