US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that British sovereignty is at risk of being violated by allowing Chinese technology corporation Huawei to develop 5G infrastructure.
"You are at the forefront of a very important decision about 5G. British Senator Tom Tugendhat is right, 'the truth is that only countries that can protect their data are sovereign,'" US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote. Twitter evening 26/1, quoted comments from Tugendhat, Chairman of the British Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.
Tugendhat previously tweeted that "sovereignty is like controlling data like land. We need to decide what is willing to invest in and who we are willing to share the technology with." The actual price to pay will come later if we misunderstand and allow Huawei to operate 5G. "
The comments came after talks between US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on January 24, in which the two leaders were said to discuss the security issues of telecommunications networks. Senior UK officials are expected to decide whether to allow Huawei to participate in bidding to build a 5G network on January 28.
The US banned Huawei last year due to security concerns. The Washington administration has warned allies not to allow Huawei to establish 5G networks, alleging that the tech company is a security threat due to its involvement with the Chinese government, which Huawei has repeatedly denied.
Pompeo regularly issues warnings about Huawei as well as investments from China. This warning, which was just around the time the British authorities made the decision, was believed to be a sign that Huawei could be chosen because of its affordable cost. However, the UK will likely impose restrictions on the Chinese technology giant.
