Portugal: President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa swam out to help rescue two women after their kayak capsized in the Algarve Sea.

The incident happened on August 15 when Mr. Rebelo de Sousa, 71, was on vacation in the Algarve region, the southernmost part of Portugal, to promote tourism here.

Mr. Rebelo de Sousa said that he was speaking to reporters at Praia do Alvor beach when he discovered two people were in distress.

"Because there is a very strong western currents, they get swept away, flip their boats, drink a lot of seawater and can't even turn the kayak over, climb on it or swim," he said, warning the women.

According to TV channel 20 Minutos, the President of Portugal is visiting many different areas of the country to promote tourism.

The country began loosening restrictions in early May and now records more than 54,000 CoV infections, of which more than 1,700 deaths.
