Merkel said she was "very angry and sad" at Trump's supporters entering parliament and said the US president was somewhat responsible.
"I deeply regret that President Trump did not admit defeat since November and again yesterday," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today.
The German prime minister also said that "millions of people who admire the American democratic tradition" were as shocked as she was, and welcomed the announcement of US President-elect Joe Biden as well as "many reactions from the US bipartisan.
Mrs Merkel grieved over the "tragic" losses in the chaos, but said the continued meeting of MPs at night to certify Biden's victory was "a sign of hope".
"Now clearly with the confirmation of victory by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, America will open a new chapter to its democracy. That means the democratic forces have won, which is what I am.
However, she warns "disturbing" images from Capitol Hill will be seen "elsewhere in the world".
The meeting to certify the election results in the US congress on January 6 became chaotic after hundreds of supporters of Trump flooded the parliament, causing MPs to evacuate.
The security forces then restored order in parliament, helping MPs continue the meeting and certifying Biden's victory.
