Alan Hurwitz used to be a teacher to promote social justice, but since 1992, he has been known as the "zombie robbery" for a series of bank robberies.
Within 9 weeks of 1992, Hurwitz robbed 18 banks in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.
After the program "America's most wanted criminals" posted videos of Hurwitz's robberies, the FBI received a number of clues, leading to the arrest of Hurwitz in Fowlerville, Michigan, northwest of Detroit.
But in late 2008, he committed a series of armed robberies in Oregon and Northern California while living in Orleans, California with his daughter Laura.
On May 20, Hurwitz was released from prison in North Carolina when Covid-19 was spreading rapidly among prisoners.
Hurwitz flew from North Carolina to Chicago and fell ill after flying to Denver en route to Orleans.
