Spain recorded more than 2,000 new cases of nCoV, bringing the total number of people infected to 6,023, making it the second largest outbreak in Europe, just behind Italy.
The sharp increase in the number of nCoV infections in Spain has led the government to declare an emergency on March 14, in order to mobilize resources to cope with the disease. Of 6,023 people infected with nCoV in Spain, 191 people were killed.
Spain has closed schools in some areas, suspended flights from Italy and closed the lower house for at least a week, after a congressman was positive for nCoV.
"We are trying to avoid repeating the Italian scenario," Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa told reporters in Madrid. "With these measures, we believe that that scenario can be avoided. If more anti-epidemic measures are needed, we will do it," he said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday declared Europe a "global epidemic" and warned that the epidemic could not be predicted. US President Donald Trump has also banned all trips from 26 European countries to the US, except Britain, within 30 days to prevent Covid-19.
The number of new nCoV infections in recent days has tended to decrease in China and South Korea, but increased in Italy, Iran, Spain, France, Germany and the United States.
Covid-19 appeared in 145 countries and territories after the disease started in China in December 2019. The world has more than 145,000 cases, more than 5,400 deaths and more than 72,000 have recovered.
