Russian military intelligence allegedly attacked the network of oil company Burisma to assist Trump in his re-election campaign.
Area 1 Security, a cybersecurity company based in Redwood City, California, USA, released a report on January 13 saying that since early November 2019, the Russian military intelligence agency (GRU) has launched the war. Online information theft service targeting Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings.
Accordingly, GRU conducted a "phishing" campaign to deceive Burisma employees. These employees are tricked into clicking links that contain malware or leading to websites with malware, allowing hackers to get victim's email information.
The cyber attack occurred at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump was dismissed by the House of Representatives on charges of seeking to pressure Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Burisma and its connection. with Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
The actions of Russian intelligence are thought to assist Trump against the recall review investigation and increase his chances of re-election.
The GRU is also accused of interfering in the 2016 US presidential election by hacking Democratic servers and presidential campaign president Hillary Clinton. Their emails, published in the last important weeks of the campaign, undermined Clinton's campaign effort. The US intelligence community concludes Russia's purpose in taking such actions to help Trump and harm Clinton.
Trump openly downgraded the conclusions of US intelligence agencies and claimed that Ukraine himself interfered in the 2016 election. thwarting a corruption investigation aimed at Burisma to protect his son. Hunter Biden is no longer a member of Burisma's board.
Oren Falkowitz, CEO of Area 1 Security, said that GRU had successfully hacked Burisma's servers with several subsidiaries and partners.
"The timing of GRU's campaign related to the 2020 US election raises the bewilderment that this is an early warning of what we have predicted since successful cyber attacks in 2016 election, "Falkowitz said.
It is not known if GRU has access to any Burisma documents and whether they will be published. The GRU has also sought to attack the network of a media organization founded by President Zelensky, according to Falkowitz.
The US-controlled House of Representatives voted late last year to vote on two terms to consider dismissing Trump, including abuse of power and obstruction of congress. The Senate trial is scheduled for this month.
Trump will only be deposed if two-thirds of the senators vote against him. However, observers believe that the possibility of Trump's deposition is very low because most Republican senators support him.
