Iraq Three rockets fell near the US embassy in Baghdad this morning, but no casualties have been reported.
Three rocket launchers hit the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, where government buildings and diplomatic missions were concentrated. Alarm sirens can be heard in the area immediately after the attack.
Iraq has recently been rocked by protests amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran after Washington airstrikes killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani near Baghdad airport on January 3. In retaliation, Iran launched several ballistic missiles at bases with US troops stationed in Iraq.
Iraqi militant commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis was among those killed by General Soleimani. Muhandis was a deputy commander of the Iraqi General Mobilization Force (PMU), a network of militia groups that were integrated into the Iraqi armed forces but also had close ties with Iran. Tough factions of the PMU have vowed to take revenge on US airstrikes.
The US has accused PMU of being behind a series of rocket attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad and US military bases across Iraq in recent months. However, no group has claimed responsibility.
