In an interview on Rossiya 1 on June 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that the world's leading military powers were rushing to develop supersonic weapons and would succeed in owning the weapons.

"I think we can surprise our partners with the fact that when they own supersonic weapons, we have the means to counter them with high success rates," Putin said.

President Donald Trump on May 16 declared that the United States owned a "super rocket" that could fly at 17 times the speed of sound.

Putin once said supersonic weapons were the first field in the United States to follow Russia in the history of defense industry.

According to the Russian President, the current US missile defense systems are obsolete because supersonic systems can easily penetrate them.

Putin introduced Avangard supersonic surfing for the first time in a speech in March 2018.
