AmericaHoward Kirby of Owosso, Michigan bought an old sofa for $ 70 and found $ 43,000 in cash inside.
Kirby, 64, last week bought a chair at an old furniture store, Habitat for Humanity Restore, in Owosso City, Michiga, USA. When he placed the chair in the house and tried it, he felt that something was amiss. "The seat cushion looks a bit stiff," Kirby said.
Mr. Kirby's daughter-in-law decided to remove the padding to see if there was anything inside the box, which contained more than $ 43,000 in cash. At first, Kirby thought about keeping the money. He even contacted a lawyer and was told that he had the legal right to keep the money.
"But God came to me and said, it's not my property," Kirby said. He then contacted the store to find Kim Fauth-Newberry, the granddaughter of the owner of the sofa, who had just died.
Fauth-Newberry was surprised to learn about the money on the sofa and said his grandfather was a frugal living, always paying everything in cash. Kirby handed Fauth-Newberry $ 43,170 in total last week and kept the chair.
The Habitat for Humanity store called Kirby a "hero" for his beautiful deeds.
