61 Italian health workers died from nCoV infection, while thousands of doctors volunteered to go to places most affected by Covid-19.
The Italian Doctors Association today recorded a total of 8,358 health workers positive for nCoV, nearly half of whom are nurses. 61 people have died, most of them in Lombardy, the area most affected by Covid-19.
Still, many people are volunteering to Lombardy and areas where outbreaks are occurring. The Italian Civil Defense Agency has received 9,448 applications within 48 hours of the announcement of the rush to recruit 500 nurses. Italian health officials last week also received nearly 8,000 doctoral volunteer petitions nationwide, though only 300 needed to support Lombardy.
With 97,689 cases of nCoV and 10,779 deaths, the Covid-19 mortality rate in Italy is 11%, arguably the highest in the world and more than double the global death rate. The country is likely to become the second country to report more than 100,000 people infected with nCoV, just after the US.
The Italian National Institutes of Health says the average age of death is 78.5, with the youngest being 31 years old and the oldest being 103 years old. About 41% of people die in the 80-89 age group while the 70-79 age group accounts for 35%. The aging population and overcrowded hospitals are two of the causes of the high death rates in Italy.
Italians hope the crisis will cool down after the number of new daily deaths shows signs of slowing down on March 22. However, the data on the following days continued to rise, causing the hope to disappear.
Covid-19 has appeared in nearly 200 countries and territories, with epidemics currently located in Europe and the United States. Worldwide has recorded more than 720,000 cases, nearly 34,000 deaths and nearly 151,000 recovery cases.
