United States Minneapolis city council votes to approve plans to disband police department and replace with a community safety agency.

The resolution was approved by all members of the city council of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, on June 12, which required the disbandment of the police department and the "Future of the Community Safety Working Group".

This resolution begins the one-year process of building a new system to enhance security in the city.

"The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers was a tragedy, showing that there was not enough reform to prevent some police department members from abusing and mistreating members of their community.

"We will together define what is safe for everyone."

The Council will gather stakeholders to discuss violence prevention, civil rights, racial justice, community relations and emergency response services 911.

The move comes days after a majority of council members voted to vow to disperse the police station and devise new community-oriented alternatives.

"When we respond to immediate action to reduce police violence and support community safety, we will invite people to help plan a long-term change process, focusing on sound.

Bender and other councilors said they intended to announce plans to remove the police station to city voters in the November 3 election.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated he did not want to disband the police station, but advocated "comprehensive structural reforms to address a racist police system".
