Japan The complained of salty taste caused a Haneda Airport terminal to be out of water for two days; Passengers must wash their hands with bottled water.
Flight operations were not interrupted, but Terminal 2, the domestic terminal in Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Japan, was cut off from the water on November 6, with no notice of the re-supply time. Terminal 1 also suffered a water outage in the morning of November 6 but resumed operations from the afternoon.
Airport Facilities, the airport water company, said it suspended water supply for terminals 1 and 2 on the morning of November 6 after customers complained about the salty taste. The company has supplied water back to Terminal 1 since the afternoon of November 6 but continues to investigate the cause of salty water.
The incident caused some restaurants in the station to temporarily shut down, the faucet at the handwashing sink did not work. A bar in Terminal 2 is forced to serve alcohol in plastic glasses because there is no water to wash glass.
Airport staff provide bottled water for guests to wash their hands in an emergency. However, toilets are not affected because they use a separate water supply system, another employee at the airport said.
Kyosuke Hirano, spokesman for Japan Airport Terminal, the operator of Haneda, the fourth busiest airport in the world, said it was impossible to estimate the time to restore the water source for Terminal 2.
