Indonesian police arrested nearly 30 suspects after Indonesian security minister Wiranto was attacked by a knife in the city of Pandeglang on October 10.
"About 27 suspects have been arrested since the attack," Indonesian national police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said today. The attackers are believed to have been "exposed to the extremism of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) militants".
Shortly after the attack on October 10, television images showed security guards controlling two suspects outside a local Muslim boarding school.
Secretary Wiranto was attacked when visiting this school. The 72-year-old former army general suffered "two deep wounds" in the abdomen, but remained alert and in stable condition and was taken to a hospital in Jakarta.
The nation with the largest Muslim population in the world is on alert before President Joko Widodo's second inauguration on October 20, with about 27,000 troops expected to be deployed in Jakarta.
The government has tightened anti-terrorism laws following a series of suicide bombings involving JAD that left more than 30 people dead in Surabaya last year. Hundreds of people have been arrested under the new law since the beginning of 2019.
Prasetyo spokesman said police also collected sharp weapons, explosives and chemicals during the raids in order to review security across the island nation of Southeast Asia.
